Ice Storm Road Driving Safety Tips

Ice Storm Road Driving Safety Tips

The city of St. Louis is experiencing what USA Today is calling the worst ice storm in 10 years. Weather forecasters predict the storm will drop freezing rain down upon the area this weekend causing power outages, downed trees, and black ice roads. Hundreds of businesses have reported they will be closing Friday evening so their associates can get home safely.

While we at Cantor Injury Law, LLC suggest staying home during the ice storm to prevent injury, we understand doing so is not an option for everyone. If you must drive during the ice storm, follow the below winter driving safety tips.

  • Pack an emergency winter kit: It never hurts to be too prepared, especially if you are driving in the storm. Make sure to pack an emergency kit before you leave. This kit should include the following items:
    • Flashlight
    • Water
    • Non-perishable snacks
    • Extra jacket, gloves, and other warm clothes
    • Ice scraper
    • Jumper cables
    • Flares
    • Tire Chains
  • Don’t follow too close: When the roads are icy, it can take two to three times as much length for your car to come to a full stop. Make sure you don’t follow other vehicles too closely.
  • Avoid suddenly braking: Braking is one of the most common ways drivers lose control of their vehicles while driving in the snow. Antilock braking systems do not always work well on icy roads.
  • Keep your tank at least half-full: If your tank is less than half full, you gas line could freeze. During icy or snowy conditions, always make sure you’re driving with at least half a tank. This way, if you are stuck in the storm, you can use your car’s gas to heat the car while you wait for help to arrive.

We hope you and your family stay safe during this storm, but we understand that accidents happen. If you were injured by a negligent driver during the St. Louis ice storm, contact our skilled St. Louis personal injury attorney to schedule a free consultation.
