School Bus Rollover near Ewing, MO Injures 29

A school bus transporting Highland elementary and high school students rolled over on Highway C yesterday afternoon (April 1, 2014) injuring 29 people including the bus driver around 3:30 p.m. The Missouri Highway Patrol's accident reconstruction team is still investigating the cause of the accident located near Ewing, Missouri.

Injured students were taken to Blessing Hospital by helicopter, ambulance and private vehicles on Tuesday afternoon. Five accident victims were reported to be in critical or serious condition following the crash. Two people injured in the accident were treated as walk-in patients at Hannibal Hospital.

At this point in the investigation, it is believed that the school bus swerved across the highway after it ran off the south side of the road. Crossing back over from the north side of the highway to the south side for a second time, the school bus flipped over into a ditch. Reports indicate that the bus passed inspection by the Missouri Highway Patrol on Feb. 25, 2014. The school bus will be reinspected following this incident. John W. Logan, 62, the driver of the bus suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Thankfully, no deaths have been reported at this time.

School buses are generally a safe mode of transportation and collisions involving school buses are quite rare. Considering the general safety, the low rates of incidents and the young lives being transported, it is important that no stone is left unturned in the investigation of these crashes. In these cases, we look at the condition of the school bus and driver error. People injured in bus accidents due to the bus driver's negligence or improper maintenance of the vehicle have a legal claim against the bus driver and the driver's insurance company.
